First things first
Before you worry about the tyre
Your safety matters more than the vehicle. This takes thirty seconds and it is worth doing properly.
Get off the carriageway if you can
A slow, careful move onto a verge, a side road or a car park is safer than stopping in a live lane. A damaged tyre is replaceable; you are not.
Hazard lights on
Especially in poor light or bad weather. Make the vehicle as visible as possible to whoever comes round the bend behind you.
Get out on the side away from traffic
If you are on a fast road, leave the vehicle and wait behind a barrier where there is one. Do not stand between your car and moving traffic.
On a motorway, call the emergency services first
If you cannot get off the carriageway or are in a live lane, that is a 999 situation, not a tyre-fitting one. Ring us once you are somewhere safe.
If you are in immediate danger , in a live lane, on a motorway hard shoulder, or unable to move to safety, contact the emergency services on 999 before calling anyone about a tyre.
What we can do at the roadside
Most flat tyres fall into one of three situations, and each has a different answer.
A repairable puncture. If the damage is in the central tread area and within the limits of the British Standard for tyre repairs, we can repair it there and then. That is the cheapest outcome and usually the quickest.
A tyre that needs replacing. Sidewall damage, a blowout, or a puncture too large or badly placed to repair safely. We bring a replacement, fit it, balance it and take the old one away.
Something that is not the tyre. Occasionally the warning light is a sensor rather than a puncture, or the wheel cannot come off because the locking nut key has gone missing. We can deal with both.
How long will you be?
It depends on where you are and what we are already booked into. We will give you a realistic answer when you call, before you commit to waiting for us.
We would rather tell you honestly that we are an hour away than promise twenty minutes and leave you standing at the roadside watching the traffic. If we genuinely cannot get to you quickly, we will say so, so you can make your own decision.
What it helps to have ready
Your location, a postcode or the road you are on, and your vehicle registration. If you can safely read the tyre size from the sidewall, that speeds things up, but the registration is normally enough. Tell us if the vehicle is a van or a 4x4, and mention it if you know the locking wheel nut key is missing.
FAQs
Emergency questions
The things people ask when they are standing next to a flat tyre.
How quickly can you get to me?
It depends on where you are and what we are already booked into. Call us and we will give you a realistic time before you commit, we would rather tell you honestly than have you waiting at the roadside wondering.
Can my puncture be repaired, or do I need a new tyre?
It depends where the damage is. Repairs are only safe within the central portion of the tread and within the limits set by the British Standard for tyre repairs, BS AU 159. Damage to the sidewall or shoulder cannot be repaired safely. We will inspect it and tell you which applies before doing any work.
What do you need to know when I call?
Where you are, what has happened, and your vehicle registration. The tyre size is printed on the sidewall of the tyre, something like 205/55 R16, and if you can read that to us it makes things quicker. If you cannot get to it safely, do not worry.
I have lost my locking wheel nut key. Can you still help?
Usually, yes. We can remove locking wheel nuts without the key, including ones that have rounded off. Mention it when you call so we bring the right kit.
Somewhere safe? Give us a ring.
Tell us where you are and what has happened, and we will tell you what we can do and when.
